How to Support the 6th Grade Transition

Tips to Help with the 6th Grade Transition

  • Check daily to make sure your student recorded their homework for EACH class.  If there is no homework, students should record “no homework.”

    • Strategies to encourage recording homework if students aren’t doing so on their own

      • Ask your student to get a signature from each teacher at the end of class and follow up at home checking signatures

      • Ask your student to get a signature from each teacher at the end of the day and follow up at home checking signatures

      • Contact your child’s 1st period teacher to request a “Homework Chart.”  The homework chart provides weekly grades, goal setting for the end of the week, recording homework for each class daily, and a nightly parent signature.

  • Sign up to use Aeries Parent Portal

    • Parents are able to see teacher Grade Books live.  As assignments are entered, parents can see the grades.

      • It is much easier to stay on top of one assignment at a time and to catch slipping grades early.  Being proactive will help students stay on track.

  • Backpack Rescue at home

    • One strategy we will work on in Study Skills is “Backpack Rescue.”  This is a designated time in class to organize backpacks, hole punch papers, place papers in their notebooks under the correct class, throw away excess paper, and reorganize items that are no longer in place.

      • One additional backpack organization per week at home helps students substantially.

  • Homework Help

    •  Southport Elementary offers after-school homework help for students on an as needed drop-in basis.  Should your student need extra assistance, a quiet place to work, or access to the Chromebooks, homework help is a great opportunity for our students after school.
