This week we'll be beginning chapter 6; adding and subtracting fractions.  We'll be learning how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Before we begin adding and subtracting with unlike denominators, we'll review adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. We'll be using area models, tape diagrams, and number lines.

Reading

This week we're beginning a new novel titled Bud, Not Buddy.  Bud, Not Buddy is a story about a young boy growing up during the depression in Flint, Michigan.  Bud loses his mother and decides to take a journey across the state of Michigan to find his father.

This week we'll also begin literature circles.  The children will choose books they think they'll enjoy reading, and then they'll read their books in a group with their peers.  They'll be expected to complete certain jobs related to their weekly reading.

States and Capitals

The children will be given the challenge of learning all 50 states and their capitals.  The children that learn them will get to attend a special party at the end of the year and be recognized at the end-of-the-year awards assembly.  The children are expected to know the 50 states, their capitals, and identify the location of all 50 states on a map.  Children can learn their states and capitals in many different ways:  flashcards, states and capital songs on YouTube, computer games, etc.  Four students have passed their states and capitals tests.  Go room 20!  We currently have four students that know their states and capitals
